Episode 3 of the Techramble Roundup is here. Alex and Jordan dig into the memory price crisis — the part that now blows up a PC budget — and the industry's strange answer: going backward to DDR4. About 30 minutes.
In this episode:
- The RAM price crisis, structural not a blip: our barometer 32GB DDR5-6000 kit runs $429–$450 (all-time low $72, ~486% above its July 2025 baseline), 64GB kits $1,200–$1,300. HBM for AI accelerators eats the wafer capacity that used to become desktop memory (TrendForce: ~22% of top-three DRAM wafer input by end of 2026, ~30% by end of 2027), Q4 contract prices up another 10–15%, relief late 2027 at the earliest, possibly 2028.
- The DDR4 lifeboat, two-tier market: Intel's Raptor Lake Next is leak-only (LGA 1700, DDR4, expected early 2027, no Core i9 tier in the leaks), while AMD's is already shipping — Ryzen 5 5500F at $99 and the 5800X3D Tenth Anniversary Edition at $349 on the ten-year-old AM4 platform.
- Same-CPU DDR4 vs DDR5 application benchmarks: compression favors DDR5 bandwidth, Blender rendering and Cinebench are a wash (tight dual-rank DDR4 can match DDR5-5200), AIDA64 puts DDR5-6000 at 1.78x writes / 2.33x reads vs DDR4-3200 while DDR4 CL16 wins latency by ~10 ns. Buying advice: discrete-GPU gaming loses single digits, integrated graphics lose an estimated 20–30%, local-LLM decode runs an estimated ~5x slower than Strix Halo — estimates labeled as estimates, not measurements.
- Intel's leaked 28-core Nova Lake-S sample in PassMark: 5,210 single-thread (ahead of the Core Ultra 9 285K's 5,059 and the Ryzen 9 9950X3D's 4,805) but a 61,509 CPU Mark trailing both — early-sample clocks, not retail silicon. Name and Q1 2027 window unconfirmed. It is DDR5-only on the new LGA 1954 socket, which is exactly why the DDR4 lifeboat exists alongside it.
- Intel–Classiq, the quantum full-stack deal: Qmod modeling language, a synthesis engine with 60+ patents, a Fault Tolerance Engine that measures real physical resource costs, Horse Ridge II cryo-CMOS control, and Tunnel Falls silicon spin qubits (a research platform, not a product). Reported price ~$2.3B kept to one line; close expected H1 2027.
- Short update: AMD's Helion racks now running at Meta (installed and under test, not full commercial rollout), plus a $1B AMD investment in Meta's equity offering. AMD Q3 on Nov 3 is the real test of whether the platform story converts to revenue.
